About The Town of Meggett
Meggett is a historic coastal railroad town located just south of Charleston, SC. Chartered in 1905, Meggett rose to prominence as a major Lowcountry freight hub in the 1920s, connecting the waterway freight system and truck farmers. The town also served as a major distribution point for the second largest oyster and fish cannery in the state.
Today, Meggett is a peaceful, quiet community of creeks, marsh, old homes and new, old families and newcomers – all located just 30 minutes from downtown Charleston and 30 minutes from the sandy shores of Edisto Beach on the Atlantic. It’s also become an artists’ retreat, with a dozen painters, sculptors and other artists finding inspiration in our beautiful town.
Along with the adjacent Post Office, railroad depot, packing shed and large merchants building, downtown Meggett prospered for over 30 years into the Cold War years. The rise of refrigerated trucks, the decline of the local oyster industry and the consolidation of the railroad led to the temporary decline of the town. But all that’s changing …Today Meggett is a charming small Southern coastal town, perfectly positioned as a bedroom community to Charleston. Two of our major employers are Stevens Towing, which provides tugboat services to the Lowcountry, and Metal Trades, which fabricates parts for large ships.
Renting the SCPA Building
In the 1920s, the South Carolina Produce Association built a large two-story brick building to house the Association and the Farmer’s Exchange Bank. After major restoration efforts, including refinishing the interior hardwood floors, this magnificent building is available for public use for receptions, meetings and other gatherings.
